ABOUT US

Freakin’ Good Burgers

BurgerFreak began in 2020 as a pop-up at a local Belmont cafe, and was a chance for a couple of Kiwi Chefs Guy and Yvonne, to combine our passion for good food and hospitality with our love of horror and heavy metal, to make the kind of place we would want to hang out at- our perfect burger spot.

As BurgerFreak’s popularity increased we quickly outgrew the capacity of the café and began the search for our own premises. We were successful in finding an old lunchbar to become BurgerFreak HQ and opened it up in Sept 2021. The lunchbar was initially only planned as a temporary location, however we discovered that it is actually quite handy for many of our loyal freaks, so we decided to stay put and make the lunchbar work for us.

By the end of 2023 we closed down for nearly 3 months to renovate our little lunchbar, and make the space work more efficiently for BurgerFreak, as well as give it a slick new feel. The renovated shop is a little bit spooky and retains the ‘grungy’ charm of the old shop but is a more welcoming and family friendly place for our community, and best of all, has a nice new kitchen with a lot more cooking space.

What makes BurgerFreak unique is that our food is created by chefs, with the majority of what we serve being made in store from scratch from real ingredients. We use high quality raw ingredients to prepare everything from smoked pulled pork and brisket, right down to homemade BBQ sauce and handcut pickles.

Nowadays BurgerFreak is open 5 days a week, slinging out epic burgs, tasty treats and good vibes… with more plans on the horizon…

OUR INFAMOUS

Stunt Burgers

To many the term ‘stuntburger’ is simply an outrageous overloaded bun piled up with anything and everything in a bid to show off… we use the term quite differently.

For us, a Stuntburger is burger outside the bounds of what you would normally expect to see on a bun.  We take inspiration from many sources, including our culinary training and background; from our travels and international experiences, as well as from our own personal history and memories to create unique and interesting combinations of flavours and new burger experiences.

From a Vietnamese Bahn Mi inspired burger to an Italian meatball chicken parmigiana combo, there is no limits to the bounds of what can go on a BurgerFreak Stuntburger.

WALL MURAL

I spy with my little eye..

Our magnificent mural was designed by local artist and Freak @Sabahtage

There are loads of hidden clues and double meanings for those who are clever enough to discover them, as well as many obvious depictions of horror movie figures, pop-culture references, anime and cartoons, as well as local landmarks and icons.

We have a sweet side too– Peggy Sue’s Coffee and Kitchen

One thing we learned from our time as a pop-up, is how well a café and burger shop can work together simultaneously from the same venue, catering to the community for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

With this in mind, it has been a long-term goal for us to recreate that dynamic in our own shop. We created Peggy Sue’s as our café brand, and as a tribute to two amazing women who helped inspire Guy to become a chef, his Gran Peggy and Aunty Sue. Both women are incredible home cooks and keen gardeners, and it was many happy childhood hours spent pottering in the garden growing all sorts of fruits and veges, and then taking them into the kitchen to prepare and preserve them every school holidays. This influence can be seen on our menu and in all our food, and it is with great pride we continue this tradition of making everything from scratch, with locally grown produce.

Peggy Sue’s Coffee and Kitchen is still a work in progress- but watch this space for future announcements, and in the meantime try one of our delicious homestyle baked treats from the cabinet- just like Gran used to make!
